Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions by visitors to The Kirby House and the Saugatuck-Douglas area. If you don't find an answer to a question you have please click on the email link below and send us your question.
Q. How do I guarantee a reservation and do you require a minimum night stay?
A. We require a first night's room payment which is billed to your Visa/Mastercard at the time you make your reservation. A refund is given if you cancel 14 day or more prior to your arrival date (less a $25 fee), otherwise the entire first night's payment is non-refunded. Reservations which include more than one room require a 30 day cancellation notification for refund (less a $25 per room fee). PLEASE NOTE THAT CANCELLATIONS MADE LESS THAN 24 HOURS PRIOR TO ARRIVAL (OR IF A "NO-SHOW") WILL BE BILLED FOR THE ENTIRE AMOUNT OF THE STAY.
Q. How close are you to the beach? Do they charge a fee for parking?
A. There are two public beaches. Douglas Beach is less than a mile from us. There are no lifeguards or concession stands at Douglas Beach. The Oval Beach is about 2 miles from us. There is a parking fee during the day in peak season. There is no fee after 6:00 p.m. There are lifeguards on duty and concession stands are available during the peak season at Oval Beach.
Q. Do you allow pets?
A. No we do not allow pets.
Q. Do you allow children?
A. Most of our guests stay with us for an intimate getaway. Some have even arranged for a babysitter to get away alone together. Due to the nature of the Inn and request of our guests children are not encouraged. Children ages 12 and over are always welcome.
Q. Is The Kirby House and Saugatuck-Douglas "gay friendly?"
A. Absolutely! The Kirby House, visitors, and area residents are as diverse as the world itself. We are gay friendly, straight friendly, golfer friendly, grandparent friendly, etc.
Q. Are the shops and restaurants open year round?
A. Many of them are. However, from about November through April most will have limited hours and may be closed mid-week. Yet, no matter what day of the year you stay here there will be some stores open and always several restaurants to choose from. Many stores are open Thursdays through Mondays during the "off months."
Q. Is it hard to get a parking spot in downtown Saugatuck?
A. During the peak season (May through October) it is more difficult to find a parking spot on weekends. However, if you are patient, you may have to drive around two or three times and usually you will end up finding a spot. The city of Saugatuck and the merchants have worked diligently to provide alternatives so we don't have to "take paradise and put in a parking lot." You can park at the High School and a shuttle will take you downtown and bring you back for free. It is only a few blocks from downtown so the short walk is not bad either. Or, just use this as an excuse to get some exercise and take a nice walk from the Kirby House to downtown. It's only about a 1 1/4 mile walk.
Q. Can you guarantee I'll have perfect weather?
A. As much as we would like to take responsibility for all the perfect weather we get here, we cannot. Therefore don't hold us accountable for weather conditions. No refunds are given for early check-outs - even if the weather is not what you anticipated.
Q. How close are you to downtown?
A. Our Inn is located in Douglas, the sister village of Saugatuck. We do not get mail delivery so we use a Saugatuck address for our mail. Saugatuck village limit is about three blocks away. The heart of downtown Saugatuck is about 1 mile from our property. Downtown Douglas is about .25 mile from us. Our location is ideal because you can get away from the crowded tourist scene and bars when you make your return to Kirby House after a day of shopping and eating. We have PLENTY of safe, off-street parking and we even have bicycles available for you if you wish to ride into downtown Saugatuck.
